Team Mascots at the County Championships

On Sunday 8th October two Tadcaster swimmers, Ellie Walker and Tom Carswell swam in the National County Team Championships as part of the Yorkshire team.

The County Team Champs is always a fun, colourful and competitive event played out in front of a packed house at Pond’s Forge in Sheffield and it was like no other gala we have ever been to! Tom and Ellie duly donned the obligatory blue face paint and took in the splendour of the hats, wigs, flags and fancy dress of the opposition.

For many swimmers the event kicks off the competitive short course season and more than 900 swimmers compete from 36 counties with races going on in two pools at the same time.

After a parade of the team captains and introductions to every county, racing got underway and with 2 pools racing simultaneously there was plenty of action to watch. There were some closely fought races and it was a little hard to hear the commentator over the air horns and cheering. Fortunately the scores for both divisions were updated after each event on the screen, adding to the excitement as the top positions changed.

Tom swam fly leg in the boys 16/17 200m medley relay team which finished 2nd and Ellie swam free leg in girls 16/17 200m medley relay team which came 4th, both swimming short course Pbs for their legs.

After 31 fast paced events – a mixture of individual 100m races and relays Yorkshire won Division One of the County Team Championships to lift the title for the 15th time. The White Rose scored 456 points to defend their crown from 12 months ago, with Devon second on 435 and Lancashire third on 423.
